To the Point! Exploring Utah’s Tech Opportunities at the Point of the Mountain (Bus)

Mobile Tour Description

Join us on a mobile tour to learn why more than 4,300 high-tech companies call Utah home. Hear from Utah's leaders, including planners, developers, and entrepreneurs, about what makes Utah so attractive. A UTA motor coach will drive attendees from the Little America Hotel to Lehi City in Utah County. Participants will be joined by key staff from the Governor's Office of Economic Development and Economic Development Corporation of Utah who will share information about what makes Utah's technology ecosystem boom. We will take a five-minute break at the Lehi City Hall before embarking on a tour of the City's numerous technology companies, led by the City's economic development director, and including a few of Utah's unicorns. Attendees will hop off the bus at Adobe where they will learn first-hand what makes Utah so attractive from Adobe's regional site operations manager’s perspective. On the way back to Little America Hotel, participants will learn about future opportunities in and around Utah's point of the mountain from one of Utah's visionary leaders from Envision Utah.


Ryan BeckRyan Beck, Senior Planner, Envision Utah

Ryan Beck began working with Envision Utah in 2008. He serves as the Senior Planner. Ryan is currently involved with Envision Utah’s work on the Your Utah, Your Future statewide vision, helping to implement the vision for the 11 topic areas. Prior to working at Envision Utah, Ryan worked with a local private transportation planning firm. While there, he prepared city transportation plans and operated travel demand models. Specifically, Ryan was involved with the Twin Falls Master Transportation Plan, Vision Dixie, and UTA/Brigham City Transit Feasibility Studies. Ryan’s education includes a B.A in History from the University of Utah and a Masters degree in Environmental Law and Policy from the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver.

LaNiece DavenportLaNiece Davenport, Director, Wasatch Front Economic Development District, Wasatch Front Regional Council

LaNiece Davenport holds a bachelor’s of geography and a master’s of public administration from the University of Utah. She has held diverse roles and responsibilities during her 13-years at the Wasatch Front Regional Council including her most recent as the Director of the Wasatch Front Economic Development District. As a senior planner with WFRC, she administered the region’s federal small cities Community Development Block Grant program and state Community Impact Board program. She led many regional planning projects including a resource management plan, broadband plan, green infrastructure plan, and natural resource hazard mitigation plan. Ms. Davenport is the President of the Utah Chapter of American Society of Public Administration and board member of the Jordan River Commission’s technical advisory committee.

Erin LaneyErin Laney, Director of Business Development, Economic Development Corporation of Utah

After a career in law as Senior Associate Attorney for Pite Duncan, LLP (now Aldridge Pite, LLP), Erin came to EDCUtah in 2013. She's enjoyed working with a diverse range of companies, including Boeing, Armada Skis, and Thumbtack. In her spare time, Erin has a passion for international travel, endurance sports (marathons being the current favorite), film, literature, and spending time with her family. Erin has a JD from Thomas Jefferson School of Law and a BS in Economics from the University of Utah.

Ben HartBenjamin Hart, Managing Director of Urban and Rural Business Services, Utah's Governor's Office of Economic Development

Benjamin Hart is the Managing Director for Urban and Rural Business Services for the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. His responsibilities include overseeing the GOED programs that help Utah businesses to grow. Prior to his position at GOED, Hart served as the director of employer initiatives for the Department of Workforce Services. During his tenure at DWS, Hart oversaw the department’s business services portfolio of programs. Hart helped develop programs such as the Small Business Bridge program, the UCAIR Clean Air Assist program and the Utah Cluster Acceleration Partnership. Hart completed both his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Utah.

Doug MeldrumDoug Meldrum, Economic Development Director, Lehi City

Doug Meldrum received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning from Utah State University in 1991. Upon graduation, Doug worked for First Security Bank then Key bank as an Area Manager until July 2006. In July of 2006, he accepted a position as the Community Development Director for South Jordan City. In November of 2009, Doug accepted a position with Lehi City as their Economic Development Director and is also accountable for the building and inspection departments. Doug currently serves as a board member for the Utah Association for Economic Development, he is the Secretary of the Lehi Area Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Legislative Policy Committee for the Utah League of Cities and Towns. He lives in South Jordan with his wife and loves being a part of the communities where he serves and lives.

Jeremy MacDonaldJeremy MacDonald, Regional Site Operations Manager, Adobe

Jeremy Macdonald is the Site Operations Manager for Adobe Lehi, and also for Latin America. He studied architecture at UC Berkeley, and Business at Thunderbird. Site Operations means coordinating budget and processes across all stakeholders and employees at each site, finding the appropriate balance of corporate oversight and local flavor. He also leads Adobe’s Employee Community Fund for investing in local non-profits.

Robert GrowRobert J. Grow, JD, CEO, President, Envision Utah

Robert Grow holds degrees in engineering and law from the University of Utah and the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and has had a diverse career, including practicing law, leading and supporting regional visioning processes, being president of a large manufacturing company, and chairing a national trade association. Grow was the primary architect of Envision Utah’s grass roots, bottom up, stakeholder driven, values based approach. He is the founding chair emeritus and current President and CEO of Envision Utah.

Implementing Active Transportation in an Urban Environment (GREENbike)

Mobile Tour Description

Explore Salt Lake City while peddling on one of Salt Lake City’s popular GREENbikes! Learn about the innovative approaches the City has taken to implement active transportation infrastructure in an urban environment. You will be joined by city and transportation agency staff who will explain the projects you will experience first-hand. Come learn about best practices for your own community. Comfortable and breathable clothing is recommended. Please bring a helmet if you would like to wear one.


Blake PerezBlake Perez, Special Projects Analyst, Salt Lake City Division of Transportation

Blake Perez currently works for Salt Lake City’s Transportation Division. In his role as Special Projects Analyst, he is charged with the task of looking at transportation planning through a more equitable lens. One of the programs that Blake coordinates is the Hive Pass Program, a discount transit pass for Salt Lake City residents. Previous to his position with Salt Lake City, Blake worked for a non-profit leading program aimed to help low income families build financial stability. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in International Studies. Blake currently serves as chair for the Rose Park Community Council and was recently elected to serve on the Board at the University of Utah’s Bennion Center.

Jennifer McGrathJennifer McGrath, Active Transportation Planner, Utah Transit Authority

Jennifer McGrath is currently the Active Transportation Planner for the Utah Transit Authority. Formerly a UTA Transit Planning Project Manager, she now has direct responsibility UTA’s ongoing Active Transportation planning efforts. Ms. McGrath has a robust real estate background having previously been a Property Administrator, Right-Of-Way Agent, and Property Acquisition/Sales Agent. Jennifer earned her Master’s Degree in Real Estate Development, Graduate Certificate in Urban Planning and Bachelor’s degrees in Urban Planning and Political Science from the University of Utah. She currently sits on the WTS Northern Utah Chapter and Salt Lake City Community Development and Capital Improvement Project Advisory Boards.

Colin QHColin Quinn-Hurst, Transportation Planner I, Salt Lake City Division of Transportation

Colin currently plans bicycle and trail projects for the Salt Lake City Transportation Division. He graduated from the Master of City and Metropolitan Planning program at the University of Utah in 2011. Colin previously worked for Commute Options for Central Oregon, a non-profit organization in Bend, Oregon promoting walking, biking and public transit.

Dan BergenthalDan Bergenthal, Engineer VII, Salt Lake City Division of Transportation

Dan Bergenthal, P.E., is a Transportation Engineer for Salt Lake City Corp and currently serves as the division’s Safety Program Manager. Over the years he has helped pioneer a variety of unique projects to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety such as adding pedestrian flags to crosswalks and green shared lanes on downtown streets. As a result of much of his work, Salt Lake City was recognized as a bronze (2007) and then as a silver level Bicycle Friendly Community (2010) by the League of American Bicyclists. He enjoys the challenge of improving safety for all modes of travel and promoting active transportation. In addition to bicycling and running, Dan enjoys camping and hiking with his wife and two sons.

Ben BolteBen Bolte, Founder and Director, GREENbike

Ben is responsible for all policy decisions, growth strategies, fundraising, financial management, branding, contracts, board/sponsor relations & setting system objectives. As Director, Ben coordinates the procurement, manufacturing and implementation processes with GREENbike’s vendors, strategic partners and local businesses.

Jake SplanJacob Splan, Engineering and Construction Planner, Utah Transit Authority

Jacob has been working in the transit industry for the past four years at Utah Transit Authority. Working in the Capital Development department with projects include assisting in the opening of new LRT lines, historic mitigation, active transportation projects and design and construction of passenger enhancements. Jacob has a Masters of Urban Planning and Development from the University of Utah. His hobbies include skiing, rafting, mountain biking, eating delicious food after adventures, playing hockey, good urban planning.

Joe TaylorJoe Taylor, Graphics and GIS Specialist, Utah Transit Authority

Joe has worked with Envision Utah, the City of West Jordan, and is currently at the Utah Transit Authority. He holds a Masters in City and Metropolitan Planning from the University of Utah. Motivated by cost and convenience, Joe has been using his bike as transportation for the better part of two decades.

Implementing the Wasatch Choice Vision Mobile Tour (Walk, S-Line, and TRAX)

Mobile Tour Description

Join us for a fun and informative look at recent and ongoing redevelopment along our new streetcar line and active transportation “greenway,” as well as a key, future redevelopment area in close proximity. Hear from experts in transportation, municipal redevelopment, landscape architecture/design, and planning who will discuss how the streetcar/greenway project came together, how it influenced past and current development in an eclectic and desirable area of Salt Lake City (Sugar House), and how our regional planning program, Transportation Land Use Connection (TLC), is assisting another city in their efforts to create similar investment and development in neighboring South Salt Lake. This tour will begin on the regional transit system, and offer participants the chance to ride both light rail and streetcar lines. A large portion of this tour will include walking along sidewalks and a grade separated, mixed-use path. Be sure to wear comfortable and breathable clothing, as well as appropriate footwear. Also, please consider bringing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.


Levi RobertsLevi Roberts, Strategic Planner, Utah Transit Authority

Levi Roberts, AICP is a Strategic Planner with the Utah Transit Authority. Levi focuses on enhancing regional transportation options through improved transit system accessibility and coordinated land use/transportation planning. Previously, Levi worked with the Five County Association of Governments of Southwest Utah where he coordinated human service and public transportation services, administered land use ordinances and developed several community affordable housing plans. Levi holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from Utah State University.

Julianne SabulaJulianne Sabula, Transit Program Manager, Salt Lake City

Julianne Sabula is a Transit Program Manager for the Salt Lake City Transportation Division. She has 15 years of experience in transportation, financial, land use and environmental planning, and holds degrees in Urban Planning and Cultural Anthropology. Her current projects include the Salt Lake City Transit Master Plan, the Sugar House Streetcar Phase 2 Environmental Analysis and Conceptual Design, and the Downtown Salt Lake City Transit Alternatives Analysis.

Ben DavisBen Davis, Project Manager, Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City

Ben is a Project Manager for the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA). His work at the RDA has focused on the design and construction of public open space infrastructure and the management of public/private partnerships through the RDA’s land disposition, loan, and tax increment reimbursement programs. In addition to his experience at the RDA, Ben has worked for an architectural firm, a civil engineering firm, and in private land development. Ben received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and an MBA from Utah State University, and has been a licensed landscape architect since 2010.

Bryce WardBryce Ward, ASLA, MPA, Urban Designer/Planner, GSBS

Bryce practices design as an urban planner and landscape architect. With a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture and a master's degree in public administration, Bryce enjoys the application and implementation of public policy through design solutions that construct interesting and engaging civic spaces. As the lead landscape designer for the S-Line public investment project, Bryce sought to create a new linear park experience for the various multi-modal users. Borrowing concepts from local ecosystems, Bryce crafted the S-Line landscapes to create a pollinator habitat that also acts as a safety delineator for pedestrians and cyclists, in addition to being a unique visual experience for all users.

Megan TownsendMegan Townsend, Transportation Planner, Wasatch Front Regional Council

Megan Townsend is a Transportation Planner for the Wasatch Front Regional Council, the Metropolitan Planning Organization of the Salt Lake and Ogden urbanized areas. Her work serves the Transportation and Land Use Connection program, assisting local communities with visioning, planning, and implementation efforts that proactively address anticipated growth. She specializes in centers planning and development, with growing experience in form based code development. Megan is completing a Master of City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah, and serves as a board member for the Seven Canyons Trust non-profit organization which she helped to found.

Francis LillyFrancis Xavier Lilly, AICP, Housing Administrator/Deputy Director of Community Development, South Salt Lake

Francis Xavier Lilly, AICP is the Deputy Director of Community and Economic Development for South Salt Lake City. Francis participated on the committee that oversaw the development of the Template Form Based Code as part of the Wasatch Choice for 2040 initiative, and worked with his colleagues in calibrating the template for South Salt Lake's East Streetcar Corridor and Downtown. Francis also serves as the City’s Housing Administrator. His responsibilities include managing the City’s Community Development Block Grant allocations, which are currently being used to fund a neighborhood revitalization campaign and a number of other initiatives to encourage long-term residency in South Salt Lake. Francis obtained a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning, a Master in Public Administration, both from the University of Utah.
